Template:Use British English Template:Use dmy dates This is a list of the highest-grossing Hindi films based on the world-wide box office estimates as reported by Box Office India and other reliable sources such as Koimoi and Bollywood Hungama.[1] Box Office India "estimates the business of Hindi films using all sources and contacts available. The numbers [posted] are all indicative as actual numbers are rarely given out by producers and distributors."[2]
The cinema of India consists of films produced across India, which includes the cinematic cultures of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The South Indian film industry (Kannada, the Malayalam, the Tamil and the Telugu industries) are considered as a single entity. During the 1940s cinema in South India accounted for nearly half of India's cinema halls[3] which has grown to 75% of all film revenues in India as of 2009.[4]
Indian films have been screened in markets around the world since the early 20th century.[3] As of 2003, there are markets in over 90 countries where films from India are screened.[5]
